Death of Democracy?

DATE: February 15th, 2010

The Corporate Reform forum of Progressive Action for the Common Good and other partner organizations invite you to attend a PUBLIC RALLY in PROTEST of the recent Supreme Court decision that money = free speech.

On President’s Day, February 15th, at noon, in front of the Federal Courthouse in Davenport, citizens will address, and demand justice, from our nine Supreme Court justices. Democracy requires vigilance and toil… if we don’t pay attention, we’ll be owned by big oil.  As if that’s not already the case, we now can be certain who will win the next race… it won’t be Obama or even Joe Biden, it will be Exxon, Monsanto and Pfizer! Do we as a culture really want to see, the end of our democracy?  If not, I suggest we all do what we can, to reinforce the brotherhood of man.  To stand with each other against corporate might, to say “hell no, you won’t win this fight!”  And lo and behold, we’ll begin to see, a rising consensus upon the land that a corporation does not equal a man.

Please RSVP and share this event with everyone you know. The flyer is attached – please print it and post it at your neighborhood books store, coffee shop, library, YMCA, union hall, community center, university, store windows, and anywhere else you can think of that will reach as many people as possible. See you the 15th!

There will be door prizes, Christmas punch, good food, good friends, and of course, some of us will be kicking up our heels on the dance floor! Don’t forget to don your peace wear/gear and if possible, bring a finger food or dessert to share.

Be sure to invite all of your friends, family, & co-workers! This will be great fun for the entire family! Palmer has recently changed their policy so we will not be serving alcohol this year. For more information, call PACG at 563-676-7580 or click to view/print our invite

Peace Forum Friday

DATE: December 11th, 2009

All of you who oppose the escalation of war in Afghanistan: We need to meet!
Where: Davenport Unitarian Church, 3707 Eastern Ave. Use the north entrance to the Community Room.
When: Friday, December 11th at 6:30pm.

Many of us are frustrated with Obama’s decision to send more of our young people to the AF/PAC war. We need your input to organize our local peace community.

Please put this meeting on your calendars and spread the word!

The Sisters of the Humility of Mary will Host “NO IMPACT MAN” a HOLIDAY SCREENING SPECTACULAR! On Monday evening, December 7th at 6:30 pm at the Humility of Mary Center, 820 West Central Park Avenue, Davenport, IA.

After the screening there will be a discussion about how we can reduce our consumption, spend less, put the fun back into the holiday season and get more of what matters out of it. In addition, a Holiday Swap Meet will take place. Everyone is invited to bring a gently used (or never used) item to trade for items that fit your gift list. Leftover items will be donated to Humility of Mary Housing and Shelter programs.

“No Impact Man”, tells the story of Colin Beavan’s decision to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for a full year. For him it means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator.  No problem – at least for Colin – but he and his family live in Manhattan. So when his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own.

It is most appreciated if you RSVP at http://bit.ly/3WDmB1. While there view a trailer of the “No Impact Man” movie. For more information contact The Sisters of Humility at 563/323-9466.
