JUNE Movie: “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin“
Friday, June 18th
Davenport Unitarian Church (downstairs in the lounge)
7:00pm
Five years in the making and the winner of more than 25 awards and honors, BROTHER OUTSIDER illuminates the life and work of Bayard Rustin, who has been described as “the unknown hero” of the civil rights movement. A tireless crusader for justice, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the legendary 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. BROTHER OUTSIDER reveals the price that Rustin paid for this openness, chronicling both the triumphs and setbacks of his remarkable 60-year career. Nominated for the Grand Jury Award at the Sundance Festival and the winner of Audience Favorite awards at film festivals in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Vienna, and other cities, BROTHER OUTSIDER has been described as “powerful and startling” (The Advocate), “rich in humanity” (africana.com), “beautifully crafted” (Boston Globe), “poignant” (TIME), “thoroughly honest” (Village Voice), and “marvelous” (Wall Street Journal). view movie website

February Movie: “Food, Inc.”
February 19, 2010
7:00pm
Davenport Unitarian Church (downstairs in the lounge)
3707 Eastern Ave
About the Film:
In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli – the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield’s Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms’ Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising?and often shocking truths?about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. “You’ll never look at dinner the same way”
JOIN THE HUNGRY FOR CHANGE CAMPAIGN:
CHILD NUTRITION ACT REAUTHORIZATION
“We believe that federally funded nutrition programs should provide all children with the healthy food they deserve. This includes low fat and safe dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Schools should be soda and junk-food-free zones and serve food that complements and furthers parents’ efforts to feed their children healthfully.”

Movie ON HOLD!!!!
“DIRT!”
Friday, November, 20th, 7pm
Davenport Unitarian Church
3707 Eastern Ave
(downstairs in the Lounge)
Floods, drought, climate change, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.
DIRT! The Movie – -directed and produced by Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow — takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and under-appreciated source of fertility — from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation.
The opening scenes of the film dive into the wonderment of the soil. Made from the same elements as the stars, plants and animals, and us, “dirt is very much alive.” Though, in modern industrial pursuits and clamor for both profit and natural resources, our human connection to and respect for soil has been disrupted. “Drought, climate change, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.”
DIRT! the Movie — narrated by Jaime Lee Curtis — brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has. It shares the stories of experts from all over the world who study and are able to harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil.
DIRT! the Movie is simply a movie about dirt. The real change lies in our notion of what dirt is. The movie teaches us: “When humans arrived 2 million years ago, everything changed for dirt. And from that moment on, the fate of dirt and humans has been intimately linked.” But more than the film and the lessons that it teaches, DIRT the Movie is a call to action.
“The only remedy for disconnecting people from the natural world is connecting them to it again.”
What we’ve destroyed, we can heal. Watch the Trailer
